Ricoeur en Whitehead een complementair duo?

This article compares the work on evil and human freedom presented by Paul Ricoeur in The Symbolism of Evil (1967) and other works, to the notion of evil and freedom in the metaphysics of A N Whitehead. Ricoeur's examination of the myths of three early civilizations shows that the ethical view of evil in which the human bears full responsibility for evil has never sufficiently described the contents of religious consciousness. Evil is not so much the result of the first free act as it is part of the "history of being". The author contends that Whiteheadian metaphysics concurs in many ways with Ricoeur's understanding of evil. In Whitehead's view evil is in no way the work of God, nor is it solely the work of the human. It arises out of the conditions of becoming, but is met with the harmonizing activity of God. From these two views the author draws several conclusions about the limits of human freedom and the nature of sin and guilt.

Het is interessant om Whitehead en Ricoeur naast elkaar behandeld te zien. Op die manier wordt voor mij de waarde Ricoeur ook duidelijker. De auteur plaatst namelijk de verschillende theologische concepten naast elkaar. Hiervan kan ik gebruik maken om die verschillende concepten uit te leggen aan de hand van de verhalen die iedereen bekend voorkomt. De abstracte gespitste aanpak van het procesdenken aangevuld met het verhalende en meer tot de verbeelding sprekende aanpak van Ricoeur.

Van de auteur Rosemary Curran Barciauskas, ten tijde van het artikel als theoloog verbonden aan het Wheeling College in West Virginia, heb ik nog volgende referenties gevonden: “Redemption Through Suffering: The Task of Human Freedom in the Writings of A. "An initiating event in the development of life on earth is thought to have been the generation of self-replicating catalytic molecules (SRCMs). Despite decades of work to reveal how SRCMs could have formed, a chemically detailed hypothesis remains elusive. I maintain that this is due, in part, to a failure of metaphysics and question this research program's ontological foundation of materialism. In this essay I suggest another world view that may provide more adequate ontological underpinnings: Whitehead's process philosophy of dynamic, relational becoming. Here we come to see molecules not as unchanging objects but rather as processes that possess the capacity for subjective experience. Molecular transformation is driven by experience, both internal and external. Process thought accounts for the world's creative impulse by positing a God who lures the becoming of all entities toward greater complexity and value. Chemical evolution is now seen as divine motivation of molecular becoming and, as such, possesses the potential for introducing true novelty into the world. The “causal joint” between God and world is hypothesized to be an energy transduction at the molecular level that allows divine action without violation of chemical principles or physical laws."

In de eerste twee onderdelen van het artikel (inleiding en 'outline') zet de auteur duidelijk de inhoud en structuur van zijn opstel uiteen. Na een wetenschappelijke introductie over het onderwerp gaat hij filosofisch aan de slag met Whitehead en ten slotte gaat het een theologische richting uit. Dit is een noodzakelijke manier van aanpakken, want het is belangrijk dicht bij het meest recente wetenschappelijk onderzoek te blijven en niet in het wilde weg te speculeren. Ik kan het moeilijk laten om het artikel nu al te lezen, maar ga toch eerst aan het blog verder werken. De auteur eindigt met "I believe that process thought offers a way of seeing reality that allows a fuller understanding of our world." Dat kan ik beamen, maar natuurlijk moet zijn voorstel kritisch worden onderzocht.
