Ricoeur en Whitehead een complementair duo?

Referentie:

Barciauskas, Rosemary Curran, "The Primordial and Ethical Interpretations of Evil in Paul Ricoeur and Alfred North Whitehead", Modern Theology 2 (1985) 1, p. 64-77.

Informatief extract:

This article compares the work on evil and human freedom presented by Paul Ricoeur in The Symbolism of Evil (1967) and other works, to the notion of evil and freedom in the metaphysics of A N Whitehead. Ricoeur's examination of the myths of three early civilizations shows that the ethical view of evil in which the human bears full responsibility for evil has never sufficiently described the contents of religious consciousness. Evil is not so much the result of the first free act as it is part of the "history of being". The author contends that Whiteheadian metaphysics concurs in many ways with Ricoeur's understanding of evil. In Whitehead's view evil is in no way the work of God, nor is it solely the work of the human. It arises out of the conditions of becoming, but is met with the harmonizing activity of God. From these two views the author draws several conclusions about the limits of human freedom and the nature of sin and guilt.

Creatieve commentaar:

Through Suffering: The Task of Human Freedom in the Writings of A. N. Whitehead and Paul Ricoeur and the Implications for a Christian Soteriology.”, Ph.D. Dissertation, Fordham University, 1983; met Debra Beery Hull, Loving and Working: Reweaving Women's Public and Private Lives. Meyer-Stone Books, 1989; “Review: The Triune Symbol: Persons, Process and Community, by Joseph Bracken.” In Process Studies 17, no.4 (Winter, 1988): 273-8.

Referentie:

Whitehead, Alfred North, De natuurwetenschap in de moderne wereld, vertaling Jan van Rheenen, Utrecht: Het Spectrum, 1959, 210 p. (oorspronkelijke uitgave: Science and the Modern World, London: Cambridge University Press, 1925).

Whitehead, Alfred North, Science and the Modern World, New York, NY: The Free Press, 1967, 212 p. (oorspronkelijke uitgave: London: Cambridge University Press, 1925).

Informatief extract:

"Alfred North Whitehead's Science and the Modern World, originally published in 1925, redefines the concept of modern science. Presaging by more than a half century most of today's cutting-edge thought on the cultural ramifications of science and technology, Whitehead demands that readers understand and celebrate the contemporary, historical, and cultural context of scientific discovery. Taking readers through the history of modern science, Whitehead shows how cultural history has affected science over the ages in relation to such major intellectual themes as romanticism, relativity, quantum theory, religion, and movements for social progress."

Creatieve commentaar:

The theory of Induction is the despair of philosophy-and yet all our activities are bes upon it.", p.24 "Each generation critisises teh unconscious assumptions made by its parents." Tegen het einde van het hoofdstuk:"We are entering upon an age of reconstruction, in religion, in science, and inpolitical thought." (p.34) Op p. 36 tot slot:"The field is now open for the introduction of some new doctrine of organism which may take the place of the materialism with which, since the seventeenth century, science has saddled philosophy."

Referentie:

Stempsey, William E., "Miracles and the limits of medical knowledge", Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 5 (2002), p. 1-9.

Informatief extract:

"In considering whether medical miracles occur, the limits of epistemology bring us to confront our metaphysical world view of medicine and nature in general. This raises epistemological questions of a higher order. David Hume’s understanding of miracles as violations of the laws of nature assumes that nature is completely regular, whereas doctrines such as C. S. Peirce’s “tychism” hold that there is an element of absolute chance in the workings of the universe. Process philosophy gives yet another view of the working of nature. Physicians have no epistemological grounds for declaring any cure to be miraculous. Miracles are theological (or philosophical) entities, and not medical entities. All physicians can do is to determine whether or not a cure is scientifically inexplicable according to the current epistemological standards of medical science. As these standards change, what is currently unexplainable may become explainable. However, we can also come to realize that our current explanations are in fact unsatisfactory. Our justifications of knowledge claims about miracles will depend on our
views about determinism and indeterminism. If the universe is not a deterministic one, we should be open to the possibility of encountering what appear to us as sui generis events. These would not be violations of immutable laws of nature, but manifestations of the true workings of nature, and certainly causes for wonder.

Key words: determinism, epistemology, Hume, laws of nature, metaphysics, miracle, Peirce, Whitehead"

Creatieve commentaar:

Referentie:

Lowe, Victor, Alfred North Whitehead: The Man and His Work, Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1985-1990, 2 Vols, 351 p. - 389 p.

Informatief extract:

Boeiend!

Mind in Nature: het procesdenken bouwt bruggen

Referentie:

Cobb, John B. - Griffin, David R. (eds.), Mind in Nature. Essays on the Interface of Science and Philosophy, Washington, DC: University Press of America, 1977, 148 p. (online beschikbaar via religion online, geraadpleegd op 22.12.2007)

Informatief extract:

"The papers in Part One, "The Evolution of Mind", describes the mystery of the rise of self-conscious, human, purposive action out of a flux in which it has been customary to find no grounds for such an emergence. Thorpe formulates the problem as a challenge to process philosophy and, after papers by Birch, Dobzhansky, and Waddington, and comments by Cobb on the potential contribution of Whitehead, Thorpe shares his concluding reflections. The issues are: What kind of continuity and what kind of discontinuity are to be found in the evolutionary process? And can process philosophy help biologists to understand their data?

Part Two, "Mind and Order", treats the broader question of what is meant by 'order' and how order is related to the human experience of purposive freedom. Several strategies for overcoming reductionism are distinguished and defended. The discussion is chiefly between physicists and philosophers, although the relation to biology is always especially in view.

Part Three, "The Primacy of Mind", opens up the specifically ontological question of how the ultimate entities of the universe are to be conceived. Two biologists and one philosopher argue that the psychical, or mental, or subjective elements in reality are more fundamental than the physical, material, or objective elements.

Part Four, "Mind and Organism", consists of papers that deal specifically with Whitehead. They include expositions of his philosophy of nature and his philosophy of science as well as more topical and critical treatments. The final essay is an account by Waddington of how his own work as a biologist has been influenced by Whitehead's philosophy."

Creatieve commentaar:

Some Whiteheadian comments on the discussion".

Referentie:

Stein, Ross L., "An Inquiry into the Origins of Life on Earth - A Synthesis of Process Thought in Science and Theology", Zygon: Journal of Religion & Science 41 (2006) 4, p. 995-1016.

Informatief extract:

"An initiating event in the development of life on earth is thought to have been the generation of self-replicating catalytic molecules (SRCMs). Despite decades of work to reveal how SRCMs could have formed, a chemically detailed hypothesis remains elusive. I maintain that this is due, in part, to a failure of metaphysics and question this research program's ontological foundation of materialism. In this essay I suggest another world view that may provide more adequate ontological underpinnings: Whitehead's process philosophy of dynamic, relational becoming. Here we come to see molecules not as unchanging objects but rather as processes that possess the capacity for subjective experience. Molecular transformation is driven by experience, both internal and external. Process thought accounts for the world's creative impulse by positing a God who lures the becoming of all entities toward greater complexity and value. Chemical evolution is now seen as divine motivation of molecular becoming and, as such, possesses the potential for introducing true novelty into the world. The “causal joint” between God and world is hypothesized to be an energy transduction at the molecular level that allows divine action without violation of chemical principles or physical laws."

[abstract from author]

Creatieve commentaar:

De auteur eindigt met "I believe that process thought offers a way of seeing reality that allows a fuller understanding of our world."
